Today is the 14th January clocks 14 years since the Barotse citizens were killed on the 14th January of 2011. Then Zambia Police forces ran amok on the humble and peaceful streets of Mongu and Limulunga, in which Hundreds of Barotses were arrested, tortured, maimed and killed. The day when the serene atmosphere of MONGU was disrupted by the sound of Gunshots.
In remembering this day the Barotseland Nationalists have declared today Wednesday 14th January, 2026 as a holiday in honor of the Barotse citizens who were slaughtered by Zambian state Police on the 14th of January 2011. Zambia police has cancelled the memorial service which was intended to be held at Blue gums in Mongu to remember their brothers and sisters who died during the `Black and Bloody Friday’ of January 14, 2011, in Mongu, Barotseland.
Meanwhile, the new Dawn government just like the PF and other precious Zambian government regimes who doesn't want to hear anything to do with Barotseland have equally refused to allow the memorial service to be commemorated and have since dispatched dozens police officers to stop any attendance.
14th January will be remembered as the sad and brutal day in the history of Barotseland, When MMD's regime of former Zambian president late Rupiah Bwezani Banda and the Zambian police forces ran amok on the peaceful and humble streets of Mongu and Limulunga , maiming, killing and arresting hundreds of its nationals. For simply holding a view that Barotseland was a territory within unitary state called Zambia, which needed to have its share and that its rights must be upheld.
According to reports as pre-empted by Dr Roger Chongwe who was tasked by the Zambian State in 2012 under then-president Michael Sata, now deceased, on that fateful day of January the 14th of 2011, 19 people including a child under 10 years were killed directly in cold blood as a direct result of the raid by the Zambian government security agents, all at the instruction of Mr Rupiah Bwezani Banda, then President of Zambia.
Following that, more than 200 people across Barotseland were arrested and tortured, charged with high treason or seditious practices, only to be released after several months without any trial or compensation for wrongful and torturous incarcerations.
