Many people living with dementia are beaten or even killed because of a lack of understanding. Why should growing old in Africa feel like a curse?
The truth is, many people simply don’t know what dementia is. Elderly individuals may forget where they are, wander at night, or behave in ways that seem unusual. Instead of receiving care, they are often accused of witchcraft.
We need to move away from superstition and stop assuming everything is caused by witchcraft. It’s important to raise awareness and educate our communities about dementia and its effects.
So, what is dementia?
A simple explanation is that dementia is a condition that affects the brain, causing memory loss, confusion, and changes in behavior. It mostly affects older people and can make everyday tasks difficult, but it is a medical condition, not something supernatural.
So the next time you come across an elderly person in such a condition,
take a moment to observe them with understanding.
Help them
It could be your grandmother
or just a relative tomorrow.
