As June 30th approaches, many of us in Barotseland are reminded of the annual observance of 30 June Kumukopano, a significant event that brought people together in spiritual and cultural celebration. This traditional gathering, held at Mr. Chana's residence in Lwandui, Nalikwanda, was a time for commemorating ancestral spirits, participating in rituals, and believing in healing and restoration.
This annual observance called 30 June Kumukopano was organized by the church called 12. As days approached 30th June every year, people from various regions in Barotseland used to organize and prepare to travel to Lwandui in Nalikwanda where this annual event used to held. Mr. Chana was believed to the leader and founder of this famous Church.
As small boys those days, we enjoyed watching our parents dancing their famous songs like; '30 June kumukopano,,,, ni sa ikela Lwandui ni yo bona Chana Mwana Mulimu' meaning am going to 30 June Kumukopano to meet Chana the son of God, others used to sing 'Tuyenu ku Lwandui mama eyo tukamone Chana kumbilingwa' kumbilingwa.'... The infectious chorus of this song was 'Haya Haya, malunga chineza! Eya. Indeed those were days...
30 June Kumukopano was more than just a gathering; it was a testament to the power of faith and community. The instant healing of people with various sicknesses and diseases was a remarkable aspect of this event, leaving a lasting impact on those who attended.
Although, Mr. Chana's passing in the early 2000s led to the decline of the 12 Church and its followers, the memories of 30 June Kumukopano remain dear to our hearts. As we approach June 30th, let's take a moment to reflect on the significance of this event and the values it represented.
Let's honor the legacy of our forefathers and the cultural heritage that brought us together. Though times may have changed, the spirit of 30 June Kumukopano continues to inspire us to come together, celebrate our faith, and support one another.
